The Road to Relief: ₹638 Crore Fix for City Choke-points

After years of delays and procedural challenges, two major infrastructure projects in Thiruvananthapuram—the Peroorkada flyover and the Vattiyoorkavu road and junction development—have finally moved into the implementation stage.

The Roads and Bridges Development Corporation of Kerala has awarded the contract for the Peroorkada flyover to Cherian Varkey Constructions Ltd., with the formal agreement expected to be signed soon. Preparatory demolition work along the Ambalamukku–Peroorkada Junction stretch, a crucial step before construction begins, has already reached about 95% completion. Officials said work will commence immediately after the contractual formalities are finalised.

At the same time, preliminary construction activities for the Vattiyoorkavu road and junction development have begun. The Kerala Road Fund Board has awarded the contract to Uralungal Labour Contract Cooperative Society, marking a major step forward for the long-pending project.

Both initiatives aim to ease congestion and improve connectivity along key routes linking Sasthamangalam, Mannarakonam, Vattiyoorkavu, Peroorkada, and Vazhayila. The Vattiyoorkavu project will involve widening and upgrading the road corridor, improving junctions with footpaths, strengthening drainage systems, and installing modern street lighting to enhance traffic flow and pedestrian safety.

Local MLA V K Prasanth said the projects are crucial for daily commuters in the region. “These works are not just routine road projects—they are lifelines for thousands of people. With tenders finalised and land issues largely resolved, we are finally moving from planning to execution,” he said, adding that both projects will significantly improve traffic flow and connectivity across this part of the city.

Both projects are expected to break ground by the end of March. The Peroorkada flyover, estimated at ₹106.7 crore, is expected to be completed within 18 months of construction. Meanwhile, the Vattiyoorkavu road and junction development project is estimated to cost ₹531.76 crore. Once completed, the projects are expected to significantly reduce congestion at key bottlenecks, particularly at the busy Peroorkada junction where four major roads intersect, and improve travel time toward the city centre and surrounding areas.
