The Munak Expressway: NHAI’s New ₹4,700cr Mission

The Delhi government has decided to transfer the construction responsibility of the Munak Canal elevated road project to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). The proposed 20-kilometre elevated corridor will run from Inderlok to Bawana in northwest Delhi and is aimed at easing traffic congestion and cutting travel time by nearly 40 percent.

The project, estimated to cost ₹4,700 crore, is expected to be completed within three years. While NHAI will execute the construction, the Public Works Department (PWD) will manage land acquisition, funding arrangements, and coordination with local authorities. Once completed, the corridor will offer seamless connectivity to major areas such as Inderlok Metro Station, Shalimar Bagh, Delhi Technological University (DTU), and the Bawana Industrial Area. It will also connect Urban Extension Road-II with Delhi’s Outer Ring Road.

The elevated road is expected to significantly enhance urban mobility, reduce pressure on existing roads, and benefit densely populated residential and industrial zones. Consultations with the Haryana government regarding the project have also yielded positive responses.
