NH-66 Makeover: Service Roads and Bypass Projects Approved

The Centre has approved the preparation of detailed project reports (DPRs) for key highway projects in Dakshina Kannada, including the long-pending Mangaluru Bypass and the construction of service roads in Kundapur.

The proposed projects aim to ease congestion on critical corridors that handle heavy passenger traffic as well as port-linked commercial movement. The Surathkal–BC Road stretch, a major entry point into Mangaluru, has long faced challenges due to narrow carriageways and the absence of service roads. Similarly, the lack of service roads along NH-66 has been a persistent road safety concern.

Dakshina Kannada MP Capt. Brijesh Chowta, who has consistently raised the issue with senior officials and at the DISHA committee meeting, welcomed the approval. Calling it a milestone, he said the projects would address a long-neglected demand of coastal Karnataka, support port-led development, enhance commuter safety, and align with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a developed India.

Consultants have now been appointed to initiate work on the DPRs. The studies will assess key aspects such as highway alignment, grade-separated junctions, road safety measures, and long-term traffic planning to ensure sustainable and future-ready infrastructure development.
