The full-scale construction of the 26.3-km Versova-Bhayandar Coastal Road has officially commenced after the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) secured clearance from Maharashtra’s Mangrove Cell.
The approval, granted on January 20, follows the Bombay High Court’s green light for the project, despite environmental concerns regarding mangrove removal. The construction will involve relocating up to 45,673 mangroves out of nearly 60,000 along the road’s alignment. Abhijit Bangar, Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects), stated, “We received the last permission on January 20—the working permit from the mangrove cell. Our project is mostly in the CRZ portion. We had already begun work in the non-CRZ zones, but this clearance will help us expedite progress.”
The Coastal Road Project will be executed in seven packages and includes the complex task of relocating high-tension power lines from Adani Power and Tata Power. Once completed, the road will link Versova to Bhayandar, significantly improving regional infrastructure and connectivity.
