West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee laid the foundation stone for the Gangasagar Setu, a four-lane bridge over the Muriganga River that will provide permanent road connectivity between Sagar Island and the mainland.
The 5-km-long bridge, estimated to cost ₹1,670 crore, will connect Lot 8 in Kakdwip with Kachuberia on Sagar Island, a major pilgrimage and tourism hub in the Sundarbans. Once completed, the bridge will greatly improve access to the island, which currently relies on ferry services often disrupted by adverse weather and tidal conditions.
Addressing a public gathering, the Chief Minister said the project would boost trade, tourism, and overall connectivity for local residents and visitors. Construction is expected to be completed within two to three years, with Larsen & Toubro awarded the contract.
The Chief Minister also highlighted broader regional development efforts, noting that 37 bridges have been built in South 24 Parganas since 2011. She further pointed to improved electricity access on Sagar Island and the establishment of a dedicated Sundarbans Police District as key initiatives aimed at strengthening infrastructure and governance in the region.
