The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is implementing safety improvement measures on the Pune–Solapur National Highway through the construction of underpasses at seven accident-prone locations within the Pune division.
The project, which commenced around one-and-a-half years ago, is aimed at reducing road accidents along the busy corridor. So far, construction has been completed at three locations, while work at the remaining four sites is currently underway. Sanjay Kadam, Project Director, NHAI Pune, said the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has introduced a special policy to minimise accidents on national highways, under which underpasses are being built to eliminate hazardous crossing points.
Each underpass is designed with a width of 30 metres and a height of 5.5 metres, enabling local traffic to pass safely beneath the main carriageway and preventing dangerous at-grade crossings. The cost of each underpass is approximately ₹20 crore, with the total project outlay estimated at around ₹150 crore.
