Stalin Accelerates Chennai's Metro Future at Iconic Kathipara

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Thursday reviewed the progress of the Kathipara Junction viaduct, a major segment of Chennai Metro Rail’s Phase II Corridor 5, which spans from Madhavaram to Sholinganallur. The Chief Minister called for expedited work to ensure timely completion and early public access to the new metro infrastructure.

Accompanied by MSME Minister T.M. Anbarasan and senior government and metro officials, Stalin received a detailed briefing on-site. The viaduct, currently under construction at one of Chennai’s busiest interchanges, features a 108-foot-high pillar—the tallest in the Phase II project—and will be integrated with existing flyovers and metro corridors at Kathipara, boosting multimodal connectivity across the city.

In addition to the elevated structure, the area beneath the flyover is being developed into an urban plaza, offering public amenities aimed at enhancing civic life. The entire Phase II network is targeted for completion by end-2028.

Taking to social media platform X, Chief Minister Stalin noted, “The #Kathipara flyover built by Kalaignar is a symbol of modern Chennai. I inspected the ongoing work where the country’s first metro viaduct across a flyover is being constructed.” He added, “I urged officials to complete this #EngineeringMarvel on time and make urban commutes in Chennai smoother and more enjoyable.”
