With construction of the new Carnac Bridge near Masjid Bunder station completed on 10 June 2025, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is now awaiting final clearance from the Indian Railways to open the bridge to vehicular traffic. The bridge serves as a critical connector between South Mumbai and the eastern suburbs, providing seamless access to key infrastructure such as the Eastern Freeway and the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link leading to Navi Mumbai.
Originally constructed in 1866–67, the bridge was closed to heavy vehicles in August 2014 due to structural weakening and was fully demolished in November 2022, following a post-COVID structural audit that declared it unsafe. Reconstruction began shortly thereafter, and the project is now in its final stages.
Providing a broader infrastructure update, BMC Additional Commissioner (Projects) Abhijit Bangar noted that:
The Bellasis Flyover is scheduled for completion by 15 December 2025.
The Sion Flyover is expected to be completed by 31 May 2026, with delays due to railway girder supply now resolved. Girders are expected to be fully installed by 10 August.
Additionally, supporting infrastructure such as approach roads, foot overbridges, and improved connectivity to Dharavi and Lal Bahadur Shastri Road is currently under construction and is targeted for completion by March 2026.
