Mumbai Metro 7A Breaks Through: Airport Tunnel Complete!

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has achieved a significant milestone on Metro Line 7A with the successful completion of the final underground tunnel between Andheri (East) and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA).

On 14 July 2025, Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) Dhruv (T-60) completed the 1.65-km upline tunnel, marking the culmination of MMRDA’s first-ever underground tunneling project. The tunnel features a 5.6-meter diameter and includes 1,178 precast concrete rings, showcasing advanced engineering and construction capabilities.

The 3.17-km Line 7A corridor includes 0.94 km of elevated track and 2.5 km of underground alignment. Construction commenced in March 2020, with tunneling operations starting in September 2023. TBM Disha completed the downline tunnel in April 2025, followed by Dhruv’s completion of the upline.

As of now, over 61% of the overall Line 7A corridor is complete. Once operational, Line 7A will connect Andheri (East) to CSMIA Terminal 2, with integration points to Metro Line 3 and future links to Lines 2A, 6, 8, and 9. The project is projected to be operational by 2026 or 2027, offering faster airport access, improved east–west connectivity, and a significant reduction in road congestion.
