Fadnavis Greenlights ₹36k Cr Mumbai-Hyderabad Expressway

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis outlined a series of major infrastructure and governance initiatives during the state legislature’s winter session, with a strong emphasis on improving connectivity, urban mobility and economic growth.

At the centre of the announcements is the proposed Jankalyan Expressway, a 450-km access-controlled corridor linking Mumbai and Hyderabad via Kalyan and Latur, with an estimated investment of ₹36,000 crore. The expressway is expected to significantly shorten the Mumbai–Hyderabad distance from over 700 km to around 530 km, sharply reducing travel time. The Mumbai–Latur journey, in particular, is projected to be cut to approximately four-and-a-half hours. The corridor will pass through Thane, Pune, Ahilyanagar, Beed and Latur districts, while also enhancing connectivity to Badlapur through the Atal Setu and a proposed tunnel.

The chief minister also announced plans to expand Mumbai’s Metro network from 91 km to 132 km over the next two years, with at least 50 km of new operational corridors targeted annually. Additional measures include annual reductions in domestic electricity tariffs and the development of a new business district in Nagpur. Emphasising the government’s priorities, Fadnavis said the focus remains on fast-tracking connectivity projects, improving law enforcement, strengthening urban infrastructure and easing the cost burden on citizens.
