Coal India Limited (CIL) has entered into a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Indian Port Rail & Ropeway Corporation Ltd. (IPRCL) to develop and upgrade rail infrastructure across CIL and its subsidiaries. The MoU was signed on June 5, 2025, in Kolkata, marking a key initiative to boost coal logistics and improve transportation efficiency.
IPRCL, a joint venture under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, holds 90% equity from 11 major ports and 10% from Rail Vikas Nigam Ltd. (RVNL), operating under the Ministry of Railways. Originally established to enhance rail connectivity at major ports, IPRCL will now support CIL in strengthening coal evacuation systems.
CIL, which contributes over 80% of India’s domestic coal output, produced 781.1 million tonnes (MT) in FY25, slightly below its target of 838 MT. Looking ahead, the company aims to produce 875 MT and achieve an offtake of 900 MT in FY26 to meet rising energy demands.
