The World Bank has approved a USD 400 million financing package to bolster Kerala’s public health infrastructure and build resilience against emerging health challenges.
The package includes a USD 280 million loan, co-financed by the Government of Kerala, under the Programme-for-Results (PforR) model. The initiative aims to improve health outcomes by addressing critical issues such as climate-related health risks and the growing burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs).
The project will focus on upgrading health infrastructure, expanding resource and workforce capacity, and strengthening emergency and trauma care systems to provide 24/7 critical services. It will also support the digital transformation of healthcare delivery and promote higher public health investments across the state.
Local self-governments will play a central role in implementation, particularly in elderly care initiatives.
Kerala—already recognized for its strong performance in maternal and child health—aims through this programme to develop a more resilient, inclusive, and sustainable healthcare system, despite facing resource constraints and emerging health threats.
