King Edward Memorial (KEM) Hospital in Parel, Mumbai, is undergoing a significant expansion aimed at easing the load on the city’s stretched public healthcare system. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced a large-scale redevelopment project that will add 500 new beds, bringing the hospital’s total capacity to 2,750 beds—making it the largest civic-run hospital in Mumbai.
Slated for completion by June 2026, the project will feature a state-of-the-art diagnostic centre, modern operating theatres, and Mumbai’s first rooftop helipad at a BMC-run hospital. The helipad, to be located atop the 18-storey Shatabdi Tower, is designed to facilitate emergency airlifts of critically ill patients during major disasters such as building collapses, fires, or railway accidents.
The redevelopment will also address infrastructure for healthcare personnel, including a 32-storey nursing school and hostel with podium parking and a 21-storey residential tower for hospital staff—marking a comprehensive upgrade in both patient care and medical education infrastructure.
