On 18 July 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone and inaugurated development projects worth over ₹5,400 crore in Durgapur, West Bengal, spanning key sectors such as oil and gas, power, rail, and road infrastructure.
These initiatives are aimed at enhancing operational efficiency, promoting cleaner energy solutions, and improving the global competitiveness of critical industrial facilities. Major highlights include:
The Bharat Petroleum City Gas Distribution (CGD) project in Bankura and Purulia, valued at ₹1,950 crore
The Durgapur to Kolkata section of the Durgapur–Haldia Natural Gas Pipeline, worth ₹1,190 crore
Installation of flue gas desulphurization systems at thermal power stations, totaling ₹1,457 crore, to reduce emissions and align with environmental norms
The Prime Minister also inaugurated the doubling of the Purulia–Kotshila rail line, along with two road over bridges under the Setu Bharatam scheme. These upgrades are expected to significantly improve connectivity across key industrial regions such as Jamshedpur, Bokaro, Dhanbad, Ranchi, and Kolkata, leading to reduced travel times and enhanced logistics efficiency for both freight and passenger movement.
