The 110-year-old Jalandhar Cantt railway station is stepping into a new era. Ahead of its official inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on July 17, Union Minister of State for Railways Ravneet Singh Bittu visited the site to review the final preparations of the ₹125-crore redevelopment project.
The overhaul transforms the historic transit hub into a world-class facility without losing its architectural soul. Visitors will now experience design elements that celebrate Punjab’s rich cultural heritage alongside a massive infrastructure upgrade. Among the new features are a double-height air concourse, heavy steel platform roofing, slip-resistant flooring, and enhanced entry points from both sides of the city.
Navigating the station will also be significantly easier thanks to two new foot-over-bridges and an expansive 4,855-square-meter parking zone. Additionally, a massive 40-meter-wide trough roof now shelters a substantial portion of the platforms.
Though dedicated entirely to passenger traffic—handling 132 trains daily, including elite services like the Vande Bharat, Humsafar, and Garib Rath expresses—the station is built for the future. Following his inspection, Minister Bittu praised the quality of the execution, stating that the project sets a new benchmark for modern, safe, and culturally rooted rail infrastructure in Punjab.
