Chennai Metro Rail Limited has achieved a key milestone in its Phase-2 expansion project with the tunnel boring machine (TBM) “Servarayan” completing an underground breakthrough near Moolakadai in north Chennai.
The breakthrough marks further progress on Corridor-3 of the under-construction 118.9-km metro expansion network. Underground tunnelling for the initial nine-km section between Madhavaram Milk Colony and Kellys is being carried out by Tata Projects using seven TBMs.
During this phase, TBM Servarayan (S99) excavated the downline tunnel between Madhavaram High Road station and Moolakadai station, covering a distance of around 824.6 metres before reaching the Moolakadai North shaft. The achievement represents the ninth TBM breakthrough completed by Tata Projects under the TU-01 contract package.
With this development, Chennai Metro has recorded a total of 23 TBM breakthroughs under its ongoing Phase-2 expansion programme, reflecting continued progress in the city’s urban transit infrastructure development.
