Pune Metro's RRTS Plan Set to Transform Airport Connectivity

Pune Metro is exploring the development of a regional rapid transit system (RRTS) to provide high-speed connectivity between Hadapsar and the upcoming Purandar International Airport as land acquisition for the airport project advances.

The Metro administration has initiated a detailed project report (DPR) to assess the feasibility and technical requirements of the proposed corridor. The planned RRTS would feature fully air-conditioned trains with advanced signalling systems and the capability to operate on elevated as well as ground-level tracks. The trains are expected to achieve a maximum design speed of 180 kmph and an operational speed of 160 kmph, with stations proposed at intervals of around five to 10 km. The DPR will also examine the construction of twin tunnels through Dive Ghat, following directions from Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The report is expected to be completed within nine to ten months, after which the state government will take a final decision on implementation.

Currently, road travel from Hadapsar to Purandar takes nearly 70 to 90 minutes, while the RRTS could reduce the journey by around 30 to 40 minutes. The project is expected to strengthen Pune’s future transport network and support airport-driven economic growth.
