Gujarat Announces ₹547Cr Medical Hub on Ahmedabad Crash Site

One year after the Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad that claimed 260 lives, the Gujarat government has announced a comprehensive redevelopment plan for the New Mental Campus in Meghaninagar, transforming the disaster-affected site into a major healthcare, rehabilitation, medical education and research hub.

The state will invest more than ₹547 crore in rebuilding and repurposing the campus, with the project aimed at creating a modern medical ecosystem while preserving the legacy of those who lost their lives in the tragedy. As part of the redevelopment, damaged structures within the campus will be demolished and replaced with new healthcare and academic infrastructure.

The centerpiece of the project is a ₹295 crore Paraplegia and Spine Hospital, which will include advanced treatment facilities, a dedicated rehabilitation centre, a physiotherapy college and hostel accommodation for up to 500 students. The facility is expected to strengthen specialized healthcare services and support medical education in the state.

To address housing requirements for medical trainees, the government will also develop G+7 hostel complexes for married postgraduate students at an estimated cost of ₹192 crore. The project will provide 510 residential units and enhance campus accommodation capacity.

Other planned facilities include a modern student canteen capable of serving 800 students and a ₹50 crore NABL-accredited Food and Drugs Laboratory, which will support testing, research and regulatory functions in the healthcare sector.

The redevelopment initiative is expected to significantly enhance medical infrastructure in Ahmedabad, expand educational and research capabilities and create a comprehensive healthcare campus serving patients, students and healthcare professionals. Once completed, the project will contribute to strengthening Gujarat’s healthcare ecosystem while supporting long-term medical and academic development in the region.
