Assam Approves Nation’s First Public Proton Beam Therapy Facility

The Assam Cabinet has approved a Rs 600 crore Proton Beam Therapy facility at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), making it the first state-run public healthcare institution in India to offer this advanced cancer treatment.

Part of a broader capital expenditure framework to elevate regional infrastructure, the project is financed through a World Bank loan of Rs 315 crore and a state contribution of Rs 285 crore. Alongside this specialized oncology hub, the state government has greenlit a comprehensive capital investment plan spanning education, road networks, power systems, housing, and social welfare infrastructure. These multi-sector initiatives will be supported by state resources, NABARD borrowings, and Central government schemes to broaden public service delivery and drive long-term socioeconomic development across Assam.
