Rajasthan Floats ₹225 Crore Plan to Modernize Iconic Chambal Dams

The Rajasthan government has initiated a ₹225 crore upgrade of key dams on the Chambal River under Phase II of the Dam Rehabilitation and Improvement Project (DRIP-II).

The modernisation programme will cover the Rana Pratap Sagar Dam, Jawahar Sagar Dam, and Kota Barrage, with tenders already floated for the works. The initiative aims to enhance water management, improve irrigation efficiency, and support power generation in the Hadoti region.

As part of the project, 17 vertical crest gates, along with sluice gates, stop-log gates, and gantry cranes, will be replaced, and the ski-jump bucket will be repaired. These structures are designed to handle a flood discharge capacity of up to 18,408 cumecs.

The Kota Barrage, constructed in 1960, will undergo replacement of 19 radial gates, two sluice gates, and other key components to improve flood control and operational efficiency, while ensuring uninterrupted water supply for drinking and irrigation purposes.

Similarly, the Rana Pratap Sagar Dam will see critical gate replacements and repairs carried out without affecting power generation or water availability. The Jawahar Sagar Dam will also be upgraded to maintain downstream flow and sustain its 99 MW power generation capacity.

Overall, the project reflects Rajasthan’s continued focus on strengthening and modernising its water infrastructure.
