Jain Irrigation Launches One of the World’s Largest Biochar Plants

Jain Irrigation Systems (JISL), the world’s largest micro-irrigation company, has commissioned a high-tech, industrial-scale biochar facility in Jalgaon, Maharashtra, marking a major advancement in sustainable agricultural and carbon management solutions.

Developed in collaboration with global technology partners, the facility has an annual production capacity of approximately 20,000 tonnes and is capable of processing over 50 tonnes of agricultural and fruit processing residues per day. It is among the world’s largest single-unit biochar reactor installations.

The plant uses advanced pyrolysis technology, a thermo-chemical process in which agricultural residues are heated in a controlled, low-oxygen environment to produce stable, carbon-rich biochar. This process converts farm waste into a valuable resource that improves soil health, enhances water retention, and supports long-term carbon sequestration.

The Jalgaon facility represents a scalable model of circular manufacturing, transforming agricultural by-products into high-value inputs for climate-smart farming. It also forms the first phase of Jain Irrigation’s broader green infrastructure strategy, with additional biochar reactors currently under development to expand capacity and support sustainable agriculture initiatives across the region.
