Goa Sets Sights on 24x7 Water Security with Three New Mhadei Dams

Goa’s Water Resources Department (WRD) is advancing plans to construct three new dams on the Mhadei river to bolster the state's raw water availability and facilitate a reliable 24x7 drinking water supply.

Water Resources Minister Subhash Shirodkar announced that the specific project locations have been finalized at Charavane, Kajumol (Dharbandora), and Shiroda. Feasibility studies, soil testing, and preliminary project reports are currently underway. The comprehensive approval process is anticipated to take approximately one year, contingent upon securing crucial forest and environmental clearances.

Successfully bringing these reservoirs online will expand raw water capacity. However, realizing the 24x7 supply goal will also require complementary infrastructure upgrades, including expanded water treatment plant capacity (such as the Opa plant), new overhead storage tanks, and revamped pipeline distribution networks. These initiatives trace back to a 2020 WRD initiative exploring minor dam options from a historical Mandovi basin master plan, aimed at securing sustainable, long-term resource management for the state.
