Mukand Sumi Steels the Future with ₹2,345 Cr Expansion

Mukand Sumi Special Steel Ltd (MSSSL), a joint venture between India’s Bajaj Group and Japan’s Sumitomo Corporation, has announced plans to set up a greenfield integrated steelmaking facility in Kanakapura, Koppal district, Karnataka. The project involves an investment of ₹2,345 crore, subject to environmental approvals.

The new facility will have an annual production capacity of 0.35 million tonnes (MTPA) and is expected to commence operations by early 2028. This expansion will increase MSSSL’s total installed capacity to 700,000 tonnes per annum, further solidifying its position as one of India’s leading producers of special steel for the automotive and engineering sectors.

Operational since 2018, MSSSL currently produces approximately 350,000 tonnes of bars, wire rods, and secondary products annually, offering over 400 grades and specifications.

The upcoming plant will be built with a zero liquid, solid, and gaseous discharge model, and over 95% of its power will come from renewable sources. This aligns with MSSSL’s long-term commitment to achieving net-zero steelmaking by 2050. Future expansion phases will incorporate hydrogen-ready systems and carbon capture technologies, reinforcing the company’s sustainability roadmap.
