1 MTPA Achieved: BALCO Scales Up Aluminium Production

Bharat Aluminium Company (BALCO), a Chhattisgarh-based subsidiary of Vedanta Aluminium, has commenced production from India’s largest 525 kilo Ampere (kA) aluminium smelter potline.

With a capacity of 0.435 million tonnes per annum (MTPA), the new potline increases BALCO’s total aluminium production capacity to 1 MTPA, positioning it among a select group of high-capacity global producers. This advancement surpasses the previous national benchmark of 378 kA, setting a new standard in smelting efficiency and scale.

The expansion supports the Government of India’s 'Make in India' initiative, aiming to boost domestic manufacturing in key sectors including defence, aerospace, infrastructure, and power transmission. Once fully ramped up, BALCO will account for over 20% of India’s total aluminium output.

The project also lends momentum to the Chhattisgarh government’s Aluminium Park initiative in Korba, which is expected to catalyse local industrial growth, attract downstream investments, and create significant employment opportunities.
