Wheels of Change: India’s New Forged Rail Hub Gears Up in Chennai

The Titagarh Rail Systems–Ramkrishna Forgings consortium is set to begin commercial production of forged railway wheels at its greenfield facility in Gummudipoondi, near Chennai, in August, advancing India's efforts to build self-reliance in critical railway components.

The plant will have an annual production capacity of 2.28 lakh forged wheels, helping Indian Railways reduce its dependence on imported wheels from global suppliers. The facility will supply around 80,000 wheels annually to Indian Railways, while the remaining production will be targeted for exports.

The project marks a major milestone for India's railway manufacturing ecosystem, enabling domestic production of high-quality forged wheels and creating opportunities for the country to emerge as an exporter of railway wheel components.
