Megha Engineering & Infrastructure Ltd (MEIL) has secured a landmark ₹12,800-crore contract from the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) for the construction of two 700 MW nuclear reactors — Kaiga Units 5 and 6 in Karnataka. This marks the first time a private sector company has been awarded a nuclear power project in India, signifying a major milestone in the country’s energy landscape.
Awarded through the Quality-cum-Cost-Based Selection (QCBS) method, MEIL emerged as the lowest bidder in June 2024. The project will significantly enhance India’s nuclear power capacity and underscores the increasing role of private players in critical infrastructure.
This contract also marks MEIL’s formal entry into the nuclear energy sector, adding to its diversified portfolio spanning power, water, hydrocarbons, irrigation, defence, and oil & gas.
