Chennai's Waste Management Gets a ₹18 Crore Consultant

The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has approved the appointment of Infra En (India) as an independent consultant to oversee two major civic initiatives: the privatised solid waste management in Zones 5 and 6, and the development of a waste-to-energy (WtE) and bio-CNG plant at Kodungaiyur.

Valued at ₹18.1 crore, the consultancy contract spans five years for solid waste management and three years for the WtE project. The decision was formalised during the council meeting held on August 26, 2025. As part of the engagement, the consultant will monitor the implementation and operations of both the bio-CNG plant and the WtE facility.

The WtE plant, awarded to Delhi MWS Solutions in March under a 25-year contract, has faced strong opposition from local residents. Civil work is currently underway at the site.

Of the total consultancy cost, ₹8.52 crore is allocated for the WtE project and ₹9.59 crore for solid waste management—half of which will be borne by the contractor.
