JSW Italy and Italian Government Partner to Modernize Piombino Rail Mill

JSW Steel Italy Piombino S.p.A. (JSW Italy), a wholly owned subsidiary of JSW Steel Limited, has signed a Development Contract with the Italian government to modernise and expand its rail mill in Piombino. The agreement, signed with the Ministry of Enterprise & Made in Italy (MIMIT), the Tuscany Region, and INVITALIA, follows a Memorandum of Understanding signed on March 1, 2024, aimed at revitalising the historic Piombino steelworks.

Under the contract, JSW Italy will receive a €33 million grant from INVITALIA to support its €143 million Rail Mill Modernisation Project. The investment will nearly double the facility’s capacity from 0.32 to 0.6 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) and enable the production of longer rails—up to 120 metres compared to the current 108 metres.

The upgraded plant will feature advanced capabilities for manufacturing ‘Head Hardened’ rails, strengthening JSW Italy’s position in the European high-speed and heavy-haul railway market. The contract is legally binding and underscores the joint commitment of JSW Italy and Italian authorities to drive industrial and economic growth in the Piombino region.
