BCML Secures Rs 75 Cr BIRAC Grant for Biopolymer Innovation

Balrampur Chini Mills (BCML) has been awarded a Rs 75 crore grant by the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC), operating under the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India.

This funding supports the creation of a 100 TPA PLA Co-Polymer R&D Facility as part of the flagship BioE3 initiative, designed to champion bio-based materials and boost India's self-reliance in biomanufacturing. Situated at BCML’s integrated manufacturing complex in Uttar Pradesh—right next to India's pioneer commercial PLA manufacturing facility—the pilot plant will serve as an innovation hub. It aims to develop advanced PLA grades, seamlessly transition laboratory research into commercial solutions, and enable efficient customer validation.

Ultimately, this milestone is set to fast-track the commercial rollout of advanced biopolymers, champion circular manufacturing, and elevate India as a global powerhouse for sustainable materials.
