Upper Sileru Goes Big: GE Vernova Secures 1.35 GW Hydro Contract

GE Vernova has secured an order from Megha Engineering & Infrastructures (MEIL) to supply nine 150 MW pumped-storage units for the 1.35 GW Upper Sileru hydroelectric project in Andhra Pradesh.

The contract will support grid stability by enabling seamless switching between pumping and power generation modes, helping manage peak demand and improve frequency regulation. GE Vernova will execute the project using its engineering and manufacturing capabilities in India, contributing to local employment, skill development, and industrial growth.

Scheduled for completion by 2030, the project is expected to be one of India’s largest pumped-storage hydropower facilities. Once operational, it will be capable of storing and supplying electricity equivalent to the annual consumption of nearly three million households.

The Upper Sileru project marks a significant step in strengthening India’s renewable energy infrastructure, highlighting the growing focus on long-duration energy storage to ensure a reliable and flexible power system.
