Dorjlung Hydro Power Limited (DHPL), a joint venture between Druk Green Power Corporation Limited and Tata Power Company Limited, has awarded a Letter of Award (LOA) to Mumbai-based infrastructure company Patel Engineering Ltd. The contract, valued at BTN/INR 230.70 crore (excluding taxes), pertains to Package I: Pre-Construction Works for the 1,125 MW Dorjilung Hydroelectric Power Project in Bhutan.
The Dorjilung project, the largest hydropower initiative in Bhutan under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, aims to meet the country’s domestic energy needs while facilitating the export of surplus clean power to India, thereby enhancing regional energy security.
Under Package I, Patel Engineering will undertake key civil and hydromechanical works. These include the construction of two diversion tunnels of 11-meter diameter (930 m and 821 m in length), a 7-meter diameter intermediate adit of 116 m, and a D-shaped highway tunnel measuring 11 m × 7.5 m with a length of 500 m. The scope also encompasses the installation of four vertical lift fixed wheel gates as part of the hydromechanical component. The project is scheduled for completion within 300 days, followed by a one-year Defects Notification Period. The site is located approximately 7 km from Autsho town in Mongar Dzongkhag, Bhutan.
Commenting on the development, Managing Director Kavita Shirvaikar stated that the award underscores the company’s expertise in executing complex hydropower projects. She highlighted hydropower as a key pillar of Bhutan’s energy future and emphasized Patel Engineering’s commitment to delivering high-quality engineering solutions while strengthening its long-term association with the country. She also noted that the company is actively exploring additional hydropower opportunities in Bhutan and neighboring regions.
This contract strengthens Patel Engineering’s footprint in the renewable energy sector and reaffirms its commitment to building resilient infrastructure that supports the transition to clean energy in India and abroad.
