Nagpur Station Gets a ₹488 Crore Makeover

The Indian Railways has announced that the ongoing modernisation of Nagpur railway station—under Central Railway’s Nagpur Division—is expected to be completed by the end of 2026. The ₹488 crore project, launched in 2022, is being executed by the Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA).

A key highlight of the project is the restoration and integration of the station's iconic 1925 heritage building, which holds historical significance linked to India’s freedom movement. According to Chief Project Manager Pawan Patil, the project aims to preserve this legacy while incorporating modern design and amenities. Cultural installations such as murals, digital signage, and artistic wall cladding will reflect Nagpur’s rich heritage.

Currently, Nagpur station handles 283 trains and approximately 68,000 passengers daily. The upgraded facility will be equipped to manage over one lakh passengers, making it a flagship model under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. The revamped station will offer seamless connectivity, world-class amenities, and an inclusive environment for all users, officials noted.

In parallel, Ajni station—located 3 km away—is also undergoing modernisation at a cost of ₹359.82 crore. Designed to accommodate 40,000 passengers, the upgraded station will help decongest Nagpur. Planned facilities include 21 lifts, 17 escalators, six travelators, spacious waiting areas, advanced CCTV and access control systems, and Divyang-friendly infrastructure.
