Piped Natural Gas (PNG), promoted as a safer, cleaner, and more convenient alternative to LPG cylinders, is steadily expanding its footprint in Thiruvananthapuram.
Think Gas (formerly AG&P Pratham), the city’s gas distribution agency, has laid 588 km of pipeline infrastructure, of which 427 km has already been commissioned. So far, 16,195 households have been connected, with plans to add 6,000 more connections by September and achieve city-wide coverage within six years.
Currently, work is underway in 42 wards, with 80% completion in 22 of them—particularly in coastal areas where most residents have already made the switch. “The project is progressing at full pace,” said Ajith V. Nagendran, Head of Think Gas operations, noting key activity in Sreekaryam, Akkulam, Anamugham, Attipra, Kulathoor, and the Peroorkada–Nettayam stretch.
Nationally, the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) has authorised 33,478 km of natural gas pipeline network. As of March 2024, 24,945 km is operational and 10,805 km is under construction. PNG currently reaches 1.47 crore households and 45,000 commercial establishments across India, with a target of connecting 12.63 crore households by 2032.
