On 14 September 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Assam Bioethanol Plant at the Numaligarh Refinery (NRL) in Golaghat, marking a major milestone in India’s clean energy transition and efforts to reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
The state-of-the-art facility is designed to produce bioethanol, offering significant benefits for farmers, generating employment, and promoting sustainable economic growth. In addition, the Prime Minister laid the foundation stone for a new Polypropylene Plant at NRL, which is expected to enhance Assam’s petrochemical capabilities, boost industrial output, and create substantial socio-economic opportunities in the region.
Highlighting the strategic importance of these developments, PM Modi stated that the projects will strengthen India’s energy security, accelerate Assam’s industrial and agricultural advancement, and open new pathways for youth employment. He also announced that Assam has attracted projects worth nearly ₹18,000 crore, including major initiatives in connectivity and healthcare—underscoring the government’s commitment to holistic regional development.
