Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated the state’s first piped natural gas (PNG) supply system for residential use in Guwahati, marking a major milestone in Assam’s shift towards cleaner energy. The launch ceremony was held at Lok Sewa Bhawan, with 101 households in the Geetanagar locality connected under the project’s initial phase.
In addition, the Chief Minister virtually inaugurated Barak Valley’s first Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) station in Silchar and laid foundation stones for piped gas infrastructure in Hajo, Sualkuchi, Rangia, and Baihata Chariali. The initiative is being implemented by Purba Bharati Gas, a joint venture of Assam Gas Company, Oil India, and GAIL Gas, with the goal of building a city gas distribution (CGD) network across Kamrup, Kamrup Metropolitan, Cachar, Hailakandi, and Shreebhumi districts.
Highlighting the project's importance, CM Sarma stated that it supports the state's clean energy vision and is backed by a transparent bidding system facilitated by the Central government. He noted that Purba Bharati Gas has committed an investment of ₹2,616.95 crore. The CGD network in Kamrup and Kamrup Metropolitan is targeted for completion by 30 September 2028.
So far, approximately 765 km of medium-density polyethylene (MDPE) pipelines and 43 km of steel pipelines have been laid. Out of 30,693 households registered for PNG connections, 6,175 have received complete ‘last mile’ connectivity and are now integrated into the supply network.
