Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) is assessing the feasibility of setting up a greenfield oil refinery and petrochemical complex near Ramayapatnam Port in Andhra Pradesh.
The proposed facility, with an estimated investment of ₹95,000 crore, is planned to have a refining capacity of 9 million tonnes per annum (MTPA). This project would significantly bolster India’s energy and petrochemical infrastructure. Pre-project activities are currently in progress as part of BPCL’s broader long-term expansion plan.
India, which consumes approximately 5.5 million barrels of oil per day, is projected to see the highest global increase in demand—an additional one million barrels per day by 2030. BPCL Chairman and Managing Director Sanjay Khanna noted that the project will strengthen BPCL’s petrochemical portfolio, serve as a hedge against petroleum product volatility, and support India’s vision of becoming a global refining hub.
Having expanded from one to three refineries with a total capacity of 40.5 million tonnes, BPCL is also advancing initiatives in renewable energy, green hydrogen, biofuels, and natural gas under its “Project Aspire” strategy. The company has set a target to achieve net-zero emissions by 2040.
