HPCL's Big Leap: Visakh Refinery Set to Boost Capacity to 18 MMTPA

Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (HPCL) is set to expand its Visakh Refinery capacity in Andhra Pradesh from 15 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA) to 18 MMTPA over the next 3–4 years. “We achieved 15 MMTPA last year, and our target for this year is 16 MMTPA. In the next 3–4 years, we aim to reach 18 MMTPA,” said R Ramakrishnan, Executive Director-Operations, HPCL Visakh Refinery, during a media interaction.

This expansion is part of HPCL’s long-term strategy to meet rising domestic fuel demand and support India’s energy security. It follows the Rs 26,264 crore Visakh Refinery Modernization Project (VRMP), which has already seen the commissioning and integration of several upgraded units.

The project is also aligned with India's clean energy goals, aiming to enhance fuel quality, operational efficiency, and emissions control. Once the refinery reaches full capacity, it will play a key role in strengthening HPCL’s refining network and contributing to the national energy grid.
