Tata Power has partnered with Norway-based Ocean Sun to pilot membrane-based floating solar technology in India, marking a step towards expanding cost-effective floating solar solutions.
Signed on the sidelines of the second India-EFTA Prosperity Summit, the agreement covers a 300 kWp floating solar pilot at Tata Power’s Mulshi reservoir in Maharashtra. The project will assess the technology’s performance, reliability, cost competitiveness and scalability under Indian conditions, generating operational insights for future deployments.
Unlike conventional floating solar systems, Ocean Sun’s technology mounts solar modules on a thin, hydro-elastic membrane instead of traditional floats, potentially reducing installation costs.
The initiative aligns with the Centre’s efforts to promote floating solar projects and tap India’s estimated 102 GW floating solar potential, supporting clean energy expansion and technology adoption.
