The City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) has appointed a joint venture of RITES and Creative Group to undertake a techno-commercial feasibility study for a proposed third runway at Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA).
The study, expected to be completed within six months, will evaluate the technical, operational, environmental, and financial viability of expanding runway capacity. The initiative comes in response to rising air traffic demand in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, where NMIA is being developed as a key aviation hub alongside Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport under a dual-airport framework.
Planned as one of India’s largest greenfield airport projects, NMIA is designed for a long-term capacity of 90 million passengers annually and 3.2 million tonnes of cargo.
The proposed third runway is intended to enhance capacity, improve operational efficiency, and strengthen NMIA’s position as a major aviation gateway for western India. A review meeting involving CIDCO and other stakeholders has already been conducted to finalise the study scope and execution framework.
