The Government of Tamil Nadu has officially designated the proposed Parandur Greenfield Airport as a ‘Special Project’ under the Tamil Nadu Land Consolidation (for Special Projects) Act, 2023, according to a Gazette notification issued on March 2.
The declaration was made by Governor R. N. Ravi, enabling the state government to expedite land consolidation and approval procedures required for the large-scale infrastructure project.
Under the Act, a Special Project refers to any development requiring at least 100 hectares of land and formally notified by the state government. This designation allows authorities to streamline land acquisition, consolidate land parcels, and fast-track regulatory clearances for major infrastructure initiatives.
The proposed airport will be developed at Parandur and is planned as Chennai’s second airport to support the region’s growing aviation needs.
Officials said the state has already acquired more than 1,500 acres of land out of the total 5,746 acres required for the project. Once completed, the new airport is expected to ease congestion at Chennai International Airport and significantly enhance aviation capacity in the region.
